Tell Me About Jesus

With a heading like that we could go on for days! What would like to know? Let me give you just a glimmer of what the Word of God declares concerning Jesus.

So many people would like to place Jesus into a category equating Him with any number of great "religious" teachers throughout world history. Perhaps He had great intentions, a good heart and a wonderful philosophy of love, but beyond that how is He really any different than say Buddha, Confucius, or perhaps Muhammad?

Well, there are a number of differences actually, let’s focus briefly on just a few of them. First and foremost we need to realize that Jesus wasn’t "just a Man" like any other man. Was He 100% human? Absolutely! He was born into humanity through the virgin Mary and as such He was as human as you are and I am. However we read concerning His conception that the angel Gabriel appeared to a virgin by the name of Mary and said, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God." Luke 1:35 The bible clearly teaches that Jesus had an earthly Mother but that God was/is His Father. What that means is that Jesus was not only 100% Man, He was also 100% God!

Now don’t be confused about Jesus’ beginnings, He was born into "earthly existence" in a little town called Bethlehem a little over 2,000 yrs ago. But the bible makes it clear that He is the second Person of the eternal Triune God (Father, Son, Holy Spirit). "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made." John 1:1-3 When you look at verse 14 of John chapter 1 you realize that when John speaks of "The Word" he’s speaking about none other than Jesus Christ! So we might say that Jesus "wrapped" Himself in humanity some 2,000 years ago, but as for His existence in reality; He’s eternal (John 17:5).

So we’re beginning to graft a distinct difference between Jesus and any other "religious leader." Jesus was not the Son of an earthly father, but the Son of God! As the Son of God He was 100% without sin, He was completely righteous and holy…His mission? To bridge the gap between sinful man and a holy and righteous God, to create a means whereby we could be forgiven of our sin and made right in God’s sight.

That brings me to the second distinction. Not only was Jesus the Son of God, as the Son of God He made the radical claim to be the exclusive means to a right relationship with God. He said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." John 14:6 He said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture." John 10:7-9. These are radical statements! As you search the scriptures you find that Jesus spoke of His eternal nature, He spoke of the essential need to be "born again" by faith in Him and trusting in the sufficiency of the sacrifice of Himself upon the altar of the cross for the penalty of our sins.
