Greeters
"For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them." (Eph 2:10)
First Impressions
Many times a church greeter is the first person people see when entering a church. You only have one opportunity to make a first impression, so the ministry of a greeter may be one of the most important jobs in the church. It’s not just a handshake and a smile…a greeter should reflect the heart of the church and extend the love of Christ to all who enter. Greeters often work alongside the ushers to make as smooth a transition as possible from the door to the service. A greeter provides information about the church, hands out bulletins, and extends a warm, friendly welcome as to prepare the congregation for a positive worship experience so that they may receive what God has prepared for them.
Providing Hospitality
Spiritual gifts are given by God, exercised by the Holy Spirit through the life of the believer. In Christ we have received a spirit of love, and as greeters, we are called to extend that love to others. Often the ministry of a greeter is the most visible in the church, so an attitude of warm hospitality is a must! They often will guide visitors to classrooms, parents to the nursery with their babies or toddlers, to restrooms, to refreshments, and also act somewhat as a “tour guide” for the church. They should have a working knowledge of the other areas of ministry so they can provide seekers with direction without confusion.
Making Connections
As a greeter, caring for others should be a natural response. The congregation counts on the greeters to make a personal connection between them and the church. The opportunity to listen to deeper needs and be involved in helping meet those needs is an essential part of this ministry. What a wonderful way to extend the compassion of Christ to others! It is important for a greeter to be acquainted with church staff, church beliefs, service schedules and times, and calendar events. As a greeter, you may end up connecting with every person who walks through the door. What an awesome opportunity to meet people, to bridge the gap between the door and an amazing encounter with Jesus Christ!
